Fear of Catastrophic Failure

In this chapter there were six different types of fallacies discussed in the text. The fallacies included perfectionism, obsession with should, overgeneralization, taking responsibility for others, helplessness, and fear of catastrophic failure. The one I would have to say I am most guilty of in intrapersonal communication is fear of catastrophic failure. Fear of catastrophic failure involves extreme negative fantasies and scenarios of what could happen. Typically it can affect my ability to do things because of what might happen when I think about it. I’m not saying this happens all the time but it does happen occasionally. After reading about the topic i found there are numerous ways to monitor and revise my intrapersonal communication. Self-talk can be used to question and challenge the irrational thinking that undermines us. Self-talk can be defined as intrapersonal communication that affects our feelings and behaviors. The rational-emotive approach to feelings can also help with the fear of catastrophic failure I deal with. Using rational thinking and self-talk are involved with this approach to change debilitating emotions.

  1. Petey,
After reading your post, I actually thought twice about what which fallacy I said I was most guilty of because I can also say that fear of catastrophic failure can also be one that I deal with. In many situation, I always tend to look at the negative aspect to it first, rather than any of the positive outcome. If I throw a party, I will automatically assume it won’t be fun or no one will show up because I think to myself, “Why would they want to come here when they can be doing something else instead”. I have to tell myself that people are going to have a great time tonight, and they would be missing out if they didn’t come. And I also can’t continuously think about all of the bad things that can happen because if I do, it will get in the way of living my everyday life.

  2. Hey!! I believe that a lot of people have the fear of catastrophic failure because I know I do. I do not know why but I always have scenarios in my head. I would think about what should I say or do instead and think about everything that can happen. I like to imagine what will happen before it happens because maybe I just have too much time on my hand. Maybe it happens because I have too big of an imagination that was inspired by television and media. It affects me a lot because I would not do something or say something because I am scared and worried something bad will happen because of it. I believe that rational-emotive approach is the best way to deal with this fear of catastrophic failure.
