Race is a classification system used to categorize humans into large and distinct populations or groups by heritable characteristics, geographic ancestry, physical appearance, and ethnicity. It is considered a primary aspect of personal identity. In my eyes race is an appropriate way to classify people just not in a negative way. Race is useful for telling people apart from their cultures to their specific region in the world. I believe it can be used as a learning tool for individuals. Those who stereotype certain races are incorrigible in the way that they think. Everyone is different and their own individual just because they may be the same race as someone doing a certain thing doesn’t mean that they will follow. I do believe that the Census Bureau should allow people to check multiple races to define themselves because not everyone is just one race. Americans especially are made up of multiple races not just a single one. Citizens have the right to express themselves through their race.
I 100% agree with you more than any other post I read. I am mixed and feel like you might be with the things you have said. If you are not, I like that you have an understanding of people and their backgrounds even though you do not experience these things on your own. I to believe that people should be able to express themselves and be proud of what they represent. As long as people are not checking 12 boxes ont eh census I think it would help the government get a better understanding of people. Just because I am proud, I check at least two boxes everytime I get one of those things.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you. Race is considered a primary aspect of personal identity; if one is not able to define each piece they identify with, then they are limited to idea of fully expressing themselves. Race can definitely be used to educate others, as well as telling people apart from their specific cultures. Everyone should have the opportunity to define him or herself by being able to select multiple races. Americans are made up of multiple races, which is what makes America se diverse. I to believe those who categorize or stereotype specific groups based on ones race need to be further educated. There are some individuals that are incorrigible due to engrained ideas that may have been taught by family members while growing up.
